Viking style Knife by Meredyth Viking style Knife by Meredyth
Viking age knife with Scandinavian style sheath.
Unfortunately the photo quality is not as good as I would have liked; sheath & belt are the same colour, and the blade is actually pattern-welded, but you can't see it here.
The knife blade was made by a Danish smith from Dejbjerg Jernalder museum, and was given as a present to me last summer. I made the oxhorn handle, leather scabbard, bronze plate parts and suspension.

Thank you for looking.

More or less, yes. Damascene or damascus stlye is a certain way of pattern welding steel, as is the Japanese technique. There are very different ways to do it, and it was quite common in Western Europe, until the methods for refining iron became superior in a way that it was no longer needed and fell out of use in the 9th or 10th centuries.

;-)
Look it up, I might be mistaken a 100 years or so, but I have seen some pattern-welded blades from 800, while most swords from the late Viking Age I know are plain steel.
